THIS SONG IS A FUCKING PARTY!!!

Original post 30/10/09 18:44: Yes, and I totally meant the double entendre of that post title. Here it is:

My ass has swivelled itself off its joints, my feet have stomped pits into the ground, it's time to let loose, bitches!  This is a seriously feel-good sexy track with a pulsating catchy-as-hell beat. I expect it'll become the anthem of the upcoming party season and initiate plenty of sweaty flexi-sexual grinding for an orgy on the dance-floor. I'm salivating for the video where I'm picturing Adam looking particularly fierce. He'd be dressed up in a mind-blowing costume and would work the part of a dominator getting down and dirty with risqué moves against other amazingly costumed and beautiful folk on the dance-floor. There'd be lots of glitter and glistening sweat on luminous skin with a feeling of danger and debauchery amongst the ecstasy.

EDIT: The crack of a whip signals the start and we know it's going to be exciting. There'll be none of that bland middle-of-the-road crap that's only use is a sedative.  In come the driving synths for a distinctive introduction.  It's important for that instant recognition.  Imagine the silence at the end of a DJ set, the lights go down, the crowd is panting a little and then the crack snaps through the air.  In that moment the partygoers are suddenly alert and attentive like meerkats, eyes light up in recognition with a burst of excitement, tired feet are forced to rush back to the dance-floor miraculously rejuvenated, just in time for when Adam's voice kicks in.

Adam's voice wasn't immediately recognisable on my first listen as it has a different quality to anything I've heard him sing before, the closest being 'Kiss and Tell'.  The pitch is much lower and he sings with aggression, sounding very masculine.  The beat is a simple one making it easy for even the most rhythmically challenged to shuffle to, and warrants a good sound system with booming bass cranked up to ground-shaking levels.  The song doesn't showcase his voice as well as it could and there are are tiny parts where it sounds overly manipulated for my liking, but it still has so much vitality. My favourite parts of his vocals come at 'over' which is just rough enough and has a little vibrato, the orgasmic 'Woah-oh's, and of course the 'scrayeeayeeyayeeaym!'.  What's great about the lyrics is that it's really left up to the listener to make of them what they will.  From what I've gathered about Adam, he enjoys sneaking in double entendres where he can so I think he loves the salacious interpretation.  The abrupt ending adds to the playful feel of being Adam's bitch after a mind-blowing session of hot rough sex.

The song doesn't have a pioneering new sound as I'd been led to believe, being highly reminiscent of Sam Sparro's 'Black and Gold' and the synthy bass brings to mind Goldfrapp's 'Ooh La La'.  It rides the wave of artists such as Lady Gaga, Little Boots and La Roux but doesn't lead, however he is a rare male representative.  Despite being so far removed from anything I associate with AI, I have a feeling it still sits on the 'safe' end of the Adam spectrum and is just a prelude for more experimental material which would otherwise freak people out.  It's a solid first single with commercial appeal to introduce Adam to the world, giving us a taste of his sound and announcing what he's all about.

The cover is beautifully fierce as you're drawn in and hypnotised by Adam's eyes.  The chains on the jewellery adorning his hand are suggestive of something a little kinky along the lines of pleasure/pain.  It has a current and edgier feel to that of the album and seems to be pretty universally liked but won't be generating much in the way of headlines.  Doesn't it feel so safe now?!

I've mentioned before that feelings about a piece of music are much more than the production, vocals, lyrics, rhythms, melodies and instruments being pleasing to the ear.  It's also about the emotions and memories weaved into it.  Music is the soundtrack to life, the soundtrack to events big and small and can be used to powerful effect. It can evoke feelings that end up lodging and breathing within it and has the ability to re-awaken long-forgotten memories. Reactions are highly dependent on whether your mood is receptive.  A catchy pop tune like this might elicit a very different response if you hear it for the first time on a club dance-floor when the party's in full swing, or if you're rushing about tired and stressed in a crowded shop trying to buy a last-minute gift.  From the timing of its release, I expect it to become a staple of end-of-year parties, which should generate plenty of positive reactions.

Right now, I associate this song with the culmination of Adam's hard work, the validation of all the choices he's made up to this point.  I associate it with everything that has happened both good and bad since I got sucked in, of you, the friends I've made from all over the globe who share this obsession and have supported me since this journey began.  After all the waiting and speculating, the projected political issues, the controversy and the ups and downs of fandom, this song feels like such a relieving burst of much-needed pure uncomplicated fun, a celebration of both passing a finishing line and the start of something new. It's an unapologetically shallow but refreshing light-hearted playful ditty done with a naughty glint and a wink. It's telling us to leave inhibitions and baggage at the door as it's time to let go and party with hedonistic abandon, because all that matters is now, bitches!

Here are the lyrics as far as I can decipher:
So hot, out the box, can we pick up the pace?
Turn it up, heat it up, I need to be entertained
Push the limit, are you with it? Baby don't be afraid
I'mma hurt you real good baby

Let's go, it's my show, baby do what I say
Don't trip off the glitz that I'm gonna display
I told ya I'mma hold ya down until you're amazed
Give it to ya 'til you're screaming my name

No escapin' when I start
Once I'm in I own your heart
There's no way you'll ring the alarm
So hold on until it's over

Oh! Do you know what you got into?
Can you handle what I'm 'bout to do?
'cause it's about to get rough with you
I'm here for your entertainment

Oh! I betcha thought that I was soft and sweet
You thought an angel swept ya off your feet
Well I'm about to turn up the heat
I'm here for your entertainment

It's alright, you'll be fine, baby I'm in control
Take the pain, take the pleasure, I'm the master of both
Close your eyes, not your mind, let me into your soul
I'mma work it 'til you're totally blown

No escapin' when I start
Once I'm in I own your heart
There's no way you'll ring the alarm
So hold on until it's over

Oh! Do you know what you got into
Can you handle what I'm 'bout to do
'cause it's about to get rough with you
I'm here for your entertainment

Oh! I betcha thought that I was soft and sweet
You thought an angel swept you off your feet
Well I'm about to turn up the heat
I'm here for your entertainment

Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
I'm here for your entertainment

Whoa-oh! Do you like what you see?
Whoa-oh! Let me entertain you til you scream!

Oh! Do you know what you got into?
Can you handle what I'm 'bout to do?
'cause it's about to get rough with you
I'm here for your entertainment

Oh! I betcha thought that I was soft and sweet (betcha thought)
Your fallen angel swept you off your feet
Well I'm about to turn up the heat
I'm here for your entertainment

  2. Love it!!!! Now we're talkin'!!!! And the photo is FAB....I knew Adam would redeem himself...:)

Love the message of the song too - perfect. "Do you know what you got into?"

    Yes, Adam...perfectly!

    Thanks Adam-bombed - you're the best

  3. Adamspirit, yes, those first few sounds at the beginning of the track sound so much like the cracking of a whip!

Anonymous, yes, those lyrics are HOT with more than a hint of S&M! Maybe I'm just dirty minded, I mean, it could 'innocently' be about singing to us fans. But I think not! It's accompanied by a glint and a wink.

Lynn, I'm glad you're back to flailing! We had no idea what we were getting into the first time we Googled Adam!
Do you feel any differently about the album cover now that you've heard the music? The music has definitely redefined the image of the title and the word 'Entertainment'!

  4. By the third listen, I was hooked!!! I was imagining Adam live! Forgot about the video! Whew! Now I'm flailing myself. And your description has me feeling it down to my toes. Great review, Adam Bombed!

  5. Love the song! The lyrics are what I imagined when we first learned the album title. And Adam Bomved - I love your title :)

  6. Adam Bombed, I'm having a party for one listening to this. You're not being dirty-minded, well if you are then I'm joining you. I'd jump into his bed and get worked over in a flash, which is what I thought the song was about the first few times I listened. But I love the layers I can see now. This man is soooo clever and such a flirt. Love a man who covers all bases!! I really liked the album cover, but the singles cover is the version of Adam I appreciate best - so far. Nicole.

  7. Adam Bombed, it is HOT! The boldness of the lyrics and the upbeat tempo, remind me of Down Low. It is not my usual taste of music. But, I end up playing it repeatedly, dancing and turning into happy mode with ease. Of course, vocally, Adam’s is unbeatable. Yes, some part of the song is kind of strange. But I guess I lose my track of analyzing, as I am dancing on the floor.

Oh, and the cover, it reminds me of MJ, bold and beautiful. But the color one will be the one stuck in my head for years.

Oh, I am slow. I finally get your title. :) ~k65535

  10. Anonymous, Adam performing this live - holy shit it's going sizzle! The AMAs need to stock up on ice. I've always preferred live to studio.

ad, did you imagine it would be as dirty?!

Nicole, I think the song has given us all a huge injection of joy. You weren't partying alone, we were all partying with you! I wonder if the cover will be different on international versions of the CD. The different regions on AO seem to point to different marketing strategies.

k65535, your perfectionist streak is endearing - it's something we have in common. Don't worry about being slow about the title, it's very subtle which is why I felt it necessary to point out :)

Diana, if you love this, imagine how you'll feel when we have the whole album of songs! We're going to explode!

Naranja, hehe, I think this lyric sums it up well:
    No escapin' when I start
Once I'm in I own your heart

  13. Indeed, the word entertainment has a brand new meaning!

I admire your writing ability so much - and appreciate how you describe music being the "soundtrack to life". So true.

No matter how other-worldly Adam's talent is, I don't think that I will ever be able to "get" that album cover....but so be it. I'll get over it! The first look was shocking though....

The Adam-dominatrix photo is, well, a whole other matter!

My premonition is that this album will be a break-through piece of work. Adam knows good music and seems to have great instincts. I am so looking forward to "Soaked" by Muse, one of my favorite bands. Apparently the lead singer from Weezer has penned a song for Adam too. With all of these standouts, it's hard to imagine a disappointing project.

Let's party at the end of November...from one side of the Atlantic to the other!

  15. What a great full review. It still amazes me how similar our take on Adam is. I hope you realise how much pleasure you give to people via this blog, providing a fun, thoughtful and drama free space to enjoy this spectacular man. I also think this song is Adam-Lite and he'll start pushing more boundaries with some of the other songs on the album as well as continuing to play it safe with others. Trying to predict him is half the fun. The only thing that has shocked me so far is my own obsession.

A strange thing happened after I heard this track - I actually felt for the first time since AI started that once I've heard his whole album perhaps my need to have this obsession will be satisfied and I can enjoy the Adam trip in a much more balanced way. Wishful thinking do you think?

  16. PS - previous comment was from Nicole. I think we're at the stage where you can call me Nikki. OK?

  17. Adam Bombed, I thought I hid it pretty well. HAHA! Oh well, this is something I learn to live with. After all, I am who I am. :)

About the possibility of having a different cover here, I have a bad feeling about it. I checked with HMV on Sat. to confirm on the availability of Adam's album. I took one look on their computer and it was a different cover, an Adam standing up with a blue sky as the background. Argh! Well, I hope they are just slow on catching up the information, even though they get the tracks right. Arghhhhhh !
Well, there is only one more month to find out. :)

Yes, I agree. Music is the soundtrack to life. It kind of captivates the "moment" of living. For each re-visit, it grows a stronger bond with us. FYE will captivate this moment of joy as always, for able to witness Adam's success. And thanks Adam Bombed for sharing your thought and analysis with us. Obsession or no obsession. I enjoy this ride very much. :)

  18. The lyric is "soft and sweet" not "awfully sweet".

  19. Lynn, I can see 'Entertain' being used smuttily by us fans as a euphemism for years to come! I also trust his instincts and can't wait to hear what the other songs will sound like. They all seem so interesting in their own unique way.

Nikki, I feel honoured! I kind of hope there'll be something on the album to really freak me out. I've thought on a number of occasions like when AI ended that I could just walk away but I'm still here!
    No escapin' when I start
Once I'm in I own your heart

Perhaps as fans, we feel even more invested in emerging talents because we want to push for everyone else to recognise and enjoy what we do. Maybe when Adam achieves worldwide superstardom we might be able to relax a little more and smugly tell people we were there from the start!

k65535, I totally understand how annoying perfectionism can be! But hopefully we get better results because of it. I'm so curious to see what cover you saw. How did he look on it? How was he dressed? Do you know how HK covers usually differ from their state-side counterparts?

Anonymous, thank you! I actually heard 'soft and sweet' first of all then later decided it was 'awfully sweet' and spent ages trying to decide. I've listened a few more times at half-speed and you're right - I've changed it.

  20. Oh yes, here I am "attentive like a meerkat" Adambombed your writing is my new addiction! Whatever he does with the video- I will have seen Adam with his "glitter and glistening sweat on luminous skin" in my mind's eye.

I'm cracking up listening to these two singles right in a row-talk about jumping in to two incredibly different musical genres with both feet! They are both so commercial...which I'm adjusting to. I miss his unadulterated voice, which has become the soundtrack of my last few months. But after having spent months watching and re-watching him perform on youtube in tiny cafe's and in the alt music world (not to mention Knottsberry Farm), it's fascinating to watch this transition to the world stage. This man is fearless...and smart. He wants to connect to the world--and I think he's thought quite a bit about what is accessible. At the same time, whether he's dramatically striding across the world as it crumbles around him (of course looking stunning in what I'm certain the AI
judges would have termed a "Twilight" vibe) or fondling a naked woman or being incredibly sweet in countless interviews or playing with S/M metaphors in what really does seem to me like a love song or perhaps battle cry to his fans -- he completely resists fitting into any one category -- the way that he slips and slides across boundaries and definitions is so much a part of his allure.

Adambombed and all of you other wonderful Adam fans-I'm so enjoying being a part of this funny, intense, slightly whacked out community.

P.S. (Oh my goddess, I keep listening to him as I write this and, ahem, he is indeed turning up the heat. ;) What an ADAMLICIOUS fall it is being.

  21. Adam Bombed, I didn't play much attention to the pic. until you mentioned the possibility of having a different cover for the international market. The Adam I recalled had a similar look as the one he had when he performed Mad World. He wore a creamy leather Jacket with a bare face and a big smile. He looked like a tall handsome guy next door with a bright blue sky as the background. It is like those pictures you take in a park, pretty but not memorable. I wouldn't mind having that hanging out on my wall though. Yes! But I don't want any alternative. If the androgyny image is what Adam wants to present to his fans, that is what I want. I still hope it is probably a picture that linked from the artist’s database. May be the information on the cover has not arrived yet.

    [Edit]
Adam Bombed, after hearing the Snippets of FYE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY-JLRmwdMc), I can't help myself but to share my thought with you. Knowing how you always want to patiently wait for the complete version for the next analysis, I will keep it simple as it is.

First, I never am expecting much, except to get a confirmation. That is my favorite ones will still be my favorites. Yes, my heart melts in the first 10 sec of both songs. I feel like a fifteen years old again. For the rest, you really can't tell much from those 10 sec. except that there is a lot of disco sound. However, I do have a discovery. It is only up till now, I've realized how sexy is Adam’s voice really is. I meant it is not the Michael Bolton's kind of sexy, but his lower register is really HOT. Lastly, TFE is something I grow to love more and more.

Thanks to this excitement, my headache is gone. Thus, I must get back to my business now. Thanks Adam Bombed for your time. BR ~k65535

  22. AMAZING ADAM...how far (IHOPE) do you think he'll go on the Award show.!!!???....

  23. Idahophoenix, thanks for your comment. I agree that the songs are commercial and I guess for his first solo material he needs to be accessible to a wide audience. The fact that he can sing anything and can adapt to any situation makes me extremely excited for the future - his potential for re-invention is almost limitless. And yes, I love this slightly whacked out community too! Thank you!

k65535, thanks for the info. Please do tell us if you find anything else out about the cover. Yes, I absolutely love his lower register too. There's something resonant about it, it's like he simultaneously sings a multitude of harmonious notes and it's so clear. That's a good thing to know: Adam = headache cure!

Anonymous, ooh, I hope he does something spectacular and the producers indulge his every whim! I'm hoping he gets a flaming head-dress and gets to wear a dazzling costume for a sexy dance routine. It would be fun if he had a whip too! Whatever he does, I'm sure it'll be visually stunning.

  24. hey hey AB/LO...just taking a brief moment of respite from prancing around to FYE to tell u I'm back online and loving your review almost as much as I love the song itself! For some silly reason I was a tad worried that I might not be able to connect to Adam's album as I had some weird assumption that it would sound like WLL...but TFM preview had me hopeful and the music video of smoky Adam had me drooling and bursting with pride! MTV keeps playing it and I love having him on telly again!! Swooon! When I heard FYE..O.M.G! Had to put up a warning...Do Not Disturb...Major Adamgasm in Progress! Was beyond excited! And then the snippets...squeee!!! Its new yet familiar...loving the retro feel! :D Don't like Strut tho...makes me want to slap Kara...again! SO SO glad FYE is the 1st single and not Strut..its just purrrrrfection! Interesting what someone mentioned about diff covers...I wonder what we will get in Asia?? Don't fancy the cover but am dying to get my paws on the CD!!! And I have to quote you sweetie... "Perhaps as fans, we feel even more invested in emerging talents because we want to push for everyone else to recognise and enjoy what we do. Maybe when Adam achieves worldwide superstardom we might be able to relax a little more and smugly tell people we were there from the start!" I always wonder if I would be so invested in Adam's journey to stardom if he had won AI...I have watched AI since Season 3 and like David Cook but once AI was over I just never followed up on him at all...with Adam I am so anxious and excited about him and for him and I just want everyone to see what we have known all along...that ADAM is not the Glittery Alien from Planet Fierce just for show...he IS the REAL DEAL! Neener Neener to the naysayers! :D love to you and all Adamfans! We are ONE! Cheers! :o)
